If you download https://ia600302.us.archive.org/12/items/jpb1991_2/k.zip and use virtual box to load the image inside the zip file, you can compile SDL successfully without having to set it up. It supports SDL 1, not 2 yet. SDL 2 can be downloaded using the image also. The virtual OS that was installed was kubuntu-14.04.2-desktop-amd64. I think the problems with SDL 1.8 on windows in the past has been that everything was not lowercase. Some of the SDL 1.8 source files had uppercase file names. This caused the compiler on linux to give an error. I will need to see if I encounter this error again using Dev C++ and changing everything to lowercase. Right now, I like linux. I was able to successfully compile a Spear of Destiny EXE for testing purposes.
You can see everything in the home directory. SDL 1.8 is in the wolf3d directory. You might be prompted for a password. The administrative password on the Linux virtual machine is Pw#8151911. The numbers are BJ's birth date.
The file is 1.7 GB in size.
Edit
A torrent is available at https://archive.org/download/jpb1991_2/jpb1991_2_archive.torrent. Archive.org generates them. Ignore the welcome.txt file in the torrent file. The Wolfenstein 3D and Spear of Destiny files are needed to run the compiled exe(s). They are not included.
