Operation: Panzerschiff SDL Empty Operation: Panzerschiff SDL

Post by Andy Sun Nov 03, 2013 3:48 am

There seems to have been a bit of a delay getting this posted on wolfensteingoodies.com, so I post this here for the "weekend warriors" until Matt is able to get the update done.

    Get your Panzerschiff here.

Ben Blaufarb's 'Operation: Panzerschiff' was originally released in 1999. It was quite mind-blowing in its day, being one of the first standalone TC's. FloEdit was new then, and Ben made extensive use of it: in addition to new graphics and sounds, he made an all-new title screen and a quite unique status bar. In the EXE, he changed the menu colour format, added random blood splats, and a whole lot more that was never seen at that time. There's 29 new levels over 4 episodes (plus 2 episodes featuring 1 known map each).

Major props to WolfForever for tesing this! His input helped spot a few mistakes on my part and uncovered other things I didn't notice.

Either this, Totengraeber, or Final Solution is probably the most code changes of any serious mod prior to S:R.

Very fun mod. A bit easy...but I like it. Have been playing those advanced mods lately, and this is just pure oldschool charm with nice touchups.

This is a fantastic mod indeed, one of the first I ever played and the one I remember best. The teal ceiling/gray texture idea I often use originates here, the whole "Rocket Arena" idea got me turned on to make something like that on my own, a level in which it's missile vs. missile, almost a Worms Armageddon type thing... lol... Or maybe not... And the sounds are so well put together, it all fits. All maps are not overblown, they're average-sized, cozy, well made and not pompously detailed, it's just a mod I'll never forget playing and I would really have loved to be the tester of this.

Yes, Thomas, noticed the influence on your mod and designs....even the toilet scenery you used in "Time to Kill" Smile

Exactly. I know AReyeP is going to kill me for saying this, but I feel that the water closet from Panzerschiff is the best water closet graphic there is. I had to size it up a little, but I owe many things to Ben Blaufarb. I remember his old page... "Necrodog"-something. The Panzerschiff editor files (MAPDATA and OBJDATA) were there and I started a project in mid-2005 based on this, used the obligatory ROTT sprites from the Image World, posted some images of this new thing on DHW and caught hell from BrotherTank and the rest of the old guard for rehashing an old mod using new sprites. In a way I understood. Don't know what happened to the maps/graphic setup though. But it was fun. Later when the site was down I managed to e-mail Blaufarb and he was kind enough to send me the files again! Now I don't know where to get these - and I don't know why, either... But it was fun to play and easy to mod as well.

After playing this mod's first 3 episodes scoring a full 100 % ratio, I can't help but notice a lot of the maps have ideas borrowed (in some instances whole sections are taken) from original Wolf or Spear maps. And I know a lot of people are going to kill me for saying this... But I don't mind! In this instance it was innocent. Before the year started with "20" and everything was new and exciting in Wolf, nicking ideas/sections of maps seems like a more exciting approach. I remember when I first started modding I always wanted to improve the original maps. I wanted to have more secrets in E1L1. I wanted the landscape from behind the columns to be pushed back, allowing a large horizon filled with gibs and guards menacing around. I don't think that's what Blaufarb wanted with this mod. Maps were always in the back of the line in the modding business then and still is to this day, when there's coding to be dealt with. Superb coding, great new graphics... That's it. Maps then need not be advanced or exciting. They just have to be there.

That said, I still think Panzerschiff is a fantastic play, and I'm definitely going back to MapEdit with a cleaned slate of ideas and inspiration.

agree with you thomas. some levels taken from wolf original. levels are made easy and small too.  noticed nice movement of characters and colors are good. chain gun using too much bullets with single push. running out of bullets soon. villains shooting too sharp that our hero losing more health each time.
