The very zenith of prog rock. Silly beginning, obscure lyrics and it all takes seven and a half minutes!! Good choice Thomas. I completely forgot all about this. Good memories.
I'm listening to some chip tune by Norrin Rad. 8 bit metal-tastic!

I really dig PFM. Second after Great Britain, Italy is definitely the best country, prog-wise. Add Germany for the krautrock and the electronic spearheading, then France for the silly/psychedelic stuff (however political it might got) - good stuff indeed. All Scandinavia did then was carry on the same, boring Dylan tradition.

The Hot Rats LP by Frank Zappa

I blasted that just two days ago (albeit on my discman, so 'blast' is maybe a bit over the edge) - love that record. I'm no Zappa geek, but his back catalogue just got re-released on CD (and downloads even, totally unheard of from someone such as Zappa) ... And 'Hot Rats' there contains the original mix. Many of Frank's albums sound totally different on CD than the original. 'Cruising with Ruben and the Jets' is a good example; sadly, the original mix has not come out on CD in this re-release campaign, but it does exist in the shape of 'Greasy Love Songs', released two years ago.
There's plenty to check out. I'm also crazy about the 'Sheik Yerbouti' album.

Indeed, I was used to the CD version of Peaches en Regalia, and the LP version has a quite noticeable different mix. It's a great LP, accessible with tasty jams. I love it. I have Over-Nite Sensation as well. I'll check Sheik Yerbouti soon.

I'd also recommend the great 'We're Only in It for the Money' record, it's really out there - and it's so good to hear something from 1967/68 that actually takes the piss on all that hippie-trippy-flower-power stuff. It really was a fad as anything else is nowadays, really blown out of proportion and not really holding much substance. But WOIIFTM is more patchy, scratched and experimental/avant garde than anything Frank ever did after 'Hot Rats', so take note before you listen!
I've also heard some stuff off 1970's 'Weasels Ripped My Flesh' ... Seems to me it's a great combination of the 'Hot Rats' instrumentation and the lyrical approach from earlier Zappa/Mothers.

"We think that progressive rock, the things you do, is overblown, it's pretentious, completely over-the-top and thoroughly pompous. What do you say to that?" "Yeah, you're about right, really!" - Rick Wakeman
