need help for mapping Empty need help for mapping

Post by ultimatelorenzo Sun Jan 30, 2011 10:47 am

After having mapped a lot for DooM/DooM2, I've decided to try wolf 3d mapping.

I downloaded and installed a few editors, but I have many difficulties.

For example, using Chaos Edit, I draw my map and save it in .map format... but actually I don't know how to use this file to play the map :-(

    Any suggestion?

In addition I couldn't find any tutorial for the above editor.

I don't edit/make maps, but I am familiar with your Doom stuff (I'm MegaDoomer on Doomworld) and I think it should be easy to create good Wolfenstein maps considering you've created lots of good Doom maps already. Smile

As for editors, I think the two good ones are Mapedit and FloEdit. Those are both fairly simple and easy to use.

(Note: While I do not post (only send PM's) on the Doomworld forums, due mainly to my reputation on that forum under previous names, I do allow myself to make actual posts on these forums.)

With ChaosEdit, if you save the map in .map format, then you have to load the map back in and then use 'save maps'. This is the 4th button down in the vertical line of buttons on the left of the screen.

To load the map back in, use the 'Import/Export Maps' button (it's the 3rd button from the right on the horizontal line of buttons).

Unfortunately, ChaosEdit doesn't have a tutorial yet Sad

Thanks... but at the moment I'm not able to make one single map... for some strange reason the editor doesn't let me draen walls or adding objects... :-(

I've managed to create a map, and now i can save it in .wl6 format. Can I give to it whichever name I want? will it be loaded by the game?

You can give it any name you want in ChaosEdit but I think it's restricted to about 12 letters in length.

It won't show at the start of the level though when you play it (unless the source code has that feature added).

Ok, thank you for your help.

I managed to create my level, save it as GAMEMAPS.WL6, and play it in dosbox.
Now a question: actually in the gamemaps.wl6 there are all the original maps + my custom map. Is this file to be shared in order to let other people play my level? With all wolf3d levels?

The maps shouldn't be released with all the original maps included. Could you save the map as a ChaosEdit map (use 'Import/Export Map' button) and send it to me? Then I can put it back into gamemaps with the original maps taken out.

I was sure you could not release all.
Please can you explain me how to do this? At the moment it is just a trial level without any true gameplay...

If it's just a trial level, it could just be released on this forum first if you want to.

To save the map as a ChaosEdit map, press the 3rd button from the right on the horizontal row of buttons (Import/Export Map button). When you have saved the map, email it to me at brian@brlowe.globalnet.co.uk .

What I do is this. I load in the original WOlf3d or Sod. Then I edit it from there.

Well, thank you again very much, but I suppose each mapper should be able do to this on his own... Can't start sending you my maps in order to be released in the correct format.

There is no problem in sending maps to me like that. It doesn't take me long to put it in a suitable gamemaps file. Smile

Ok, again: thank you but I can't believe that each wolf3d mapper send you his map in order to have it in a releaseable file...

As I said. What people do is that they edit a map from original Wolf3d or Sod. They click "save all maps". You email the zip file to Schabbs. Smile Done deal.

oh no, making doom maps is far different (and in my opinion much easier)

You can actually draw out the map with line tools, add objects, etc.

And then 3D mode to look and realine textures or raise-lower ceilings.

Wolf mapping even has me confused and almost frustrated, but making maps for quake is easily the most confusing. Its like reading calculus and geomotry without learning the basics of math. Frustrating and impossible.
