Re: What music are you listening to? Part II
Yes, SF Sorrow came out in '68 (same time as Beggars Banquet, The White Album and The Village Green Preservation Society), so it was of course overlooked. The Pretty Things were never as hyped as Stones/Kinks/Beatles/Move, those kinds of bands, which was a shame, really. At least not in '68. The entire album was a rock opera, a concept album of sorts, recorded in 1967... The Who's "Tommy", deemed by many (which means Rolling Stone magazine and its psychofants, probably those who conceived the superfluous term "classic rock") was recorded during '68 and '69 and released that year, a full year after SF Sorrow - but still everybody says, "oh, that's the first rock opera/concept album" etc... What a shame.Schabbs wrote:I like this one too. I think it was before the album:
But Don't Bring Me Down (along with Rosalyn) is a great record, "Rosalyn" is extremely raunchy (at least for it's time)... Together with Van Morrison's Them they really kicked off what was to be garage rock in the states (at least that's my opinion).
With Merseybeat and mid sixties box sets being out (The Complete EMI recording of Manfred Mann, Billy J. Kramer & the Dakotas, The Hollies, The Searches etc.) I'm surprised that the Pretty Things haven't got a complete box out - at least just from 1964-70. I know they made some stuff after that, but I haven't gotten into it.
Another band of the like... The Small Faces, because of their inauguration to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, another lame concept, will see their back catalogue re-released in deluxe editions in May... That will be an excellent opportunity to get their records. 'Cause just as with SF Sorrow, "Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake" also broke down a few barriers when it came out in '68 though the public didn't notice, 'cause they were infatuated with the "bad day at rehearsal"-sounds of the White Album. Too bad!

Re: What music are you listening to? Part II
From what I remember. the concept of SF Sorrow was well received and it got a lot of airplay. All the tracks were good but not having one outstanding track for a single release didn't help. It wasn't promoted well. The Beatles white album etc, as you say, made it more difficult too.
Anyway, here's another early Pretty Things track

Re: What music are you listening to? Part II
Great early PT track, Brian... It's good to see SF Sorrow did get some appreciation, and here in the latter years it's also a cult favorite. I'm certain that Pete Townshend must've heard this album more than once when The Who made Tommy. The opening of "Old Man Going" reminds me too much of Pinball Wizard.Schabbs wrote:From what I remember. the concept of SF Sorrow was well received and it got a lot of airplay. Another great 1968 album by a short-lived sixties group is OGDENS' NUT GONE FLAKE by the Small Faces. The orgasmic instrumental title song says it all.....

I like the title track of OGDENS' NUT GONE FLAKE by the Small Faces. I don't like the Lazy Sunday single though.
Here's an earlier Small Faces single:

Re: What music are you listening to? Part II
"All or Nothing" is a great song as well as a great pop single; their debut album is extremely raunchy, exciting and overall a great blend of garage rock in spe and R&B/soul and (I think it's called) freakbeat. Steve Marriott's voice is one of the best and most sincere I've ever heard. I haven't a clue why that guy hasn't got more acclaim.

Re: What music are you listening to? Part II
RHCP needs to release a box set with all their recordings - INCLUDING those b-sides. I'd gladly slot out the entire ONE HOT MINUTE album (except for "My Friends") for any b-side from the "By the Way" and "Stadium Arcadium" period.
It's their 30th anniversary next year... Great opportunity, and seeing they've already got Universal Music written far up their behinds, it's not unlikely. YEAH!

Re: What music are you listening to? Part II
They're releasing an EP with some covers: Havanna Affair, Search & Destroy, Sufragette City and three others are on there. But yeah, I would love such a set! And while they're at it, release some I'm With You B-sides as well!
BTW One Hot Minute is not as terrible as I had anticipated. Sure, it has some songs I don't care about, and Tearjerker is probably the worst RHCP song ever, but stuff like Transcending or Shallow be Thy Game is still pretty great. Not as good as any other of their albums, but certainly not the shitfest I had anticipated. That said, a b-side album would be a win.
