VDMS sound?? or DosBox?? Empty VDMS sound?? or DosBox??

    Post by jayngo26 Wed Aug 13, 2008 4:22 am

I just recently got back into wolf after a 13 year absence.(Wow.) Anyway, after purchasing the game for a second time in my life Smile I found that my windows xp would not play the music and some other sounds in the game. I looked into it and I ended up dowloading and using an emulator called VDMS sound. It works-but is just that, an emulator. Anyway, my entire mod crashed last night. Has just downloaded and inserted one of the spider web sprites. I placed it in my level right in front of a door. When I got to it-BAM-crash!!! But it gave me some kind of VDMS error?? Maybe I messed up and put an object(although passable) right in front of a door?? My question is, should I scrap VDMS and download DosBox? What does everyone else use to run their wolf3d? Thanks. (Oh, and no worries, I had backed up my mod, so not all was lost!!)

    I don't use DOSbox with wolf3d.
I use VDMsound only (rightclick --> run with VDMsound)

Maybe the crash was caused by a guard or a wrong sound...

    Your options:
    -VDMsound
    -SoundFx
    -Dosbox
    -VirtualPC
    -Wolf4SDL port
-conquer Microsoft and force them to develop a windows 4wolf
-drink some beer and do the music/sounds yourself

I use a combination of soundless option, SoundFx and Dosbox. I also use VDMS on rare occasions.

Your crash wasn't connected to VDM Sound, it just gives that error when the game crashes.

I use VDM sound, I find it much better than DOSbox.

Thanks for all the tips. Nice to know VDM wasn't the issue with my crash. As for what Nexion said, I will look into those other options. I don't know if the others are emulators as well, I just get disappointed when VDM can't keep up. Sometimes, sound goes out all together(like doors becoming silent). Usually shooting a weapon or going back into main menu screen solves it, but ughh! Annoying. I believe I remember that the wolf4sdl doesnt even need vdm?? If that's the case, that's the way to go. Just haven't gotten that far yet....

Oh, yah. Almost forgot. I really liked Nexion's last two options. Making this mod is starting me down the path of the last one... Very Happy

I use VDMSound for Wolf - mainly because without it, I can't hear digitized sounds or music. I never got into Dosbox, I found it confusing and didn't understand it - and that was just the installation file.

I use DOSBox mostly because I have an LCD monitor, and scaling a 320x200 game to 1280x1024 makes the graphics look 100% worse than they already are. In DOSBox, I run in a window, which in turn the game looks as it always did.

    You are so wrong.....
    1. DOSbox doesn't requires any install
    2. You can download DOSboxcvs edition that is veeeery user-friendly.

I think using win98 is the best solution..I use OS Loader to boot into win98..wich is my choice OS unless I need to use xp specific hardware...neither Dosbox or vdms sound cut it for me.

it sucks having to save your game every 10min because you're paranoid that the game will crap out..
