At http://textadventures.co.uk, you can download software called Quest to create text adventures and choose your own adventure game books. I have been experimenting around with them.

I have also experimented around with Inform, which is at http://inform7.com. Inform was created in 1993 and is still being updated today.

For choose your own adventure games, I prefer to use HTML to create them instead of having to use software. For text adventure games, I have to either use Inform or Quest to create them. Quest seems easier though.

Downloaded from maybe 5 years ago, I think that I have 2 files from The Mario Bros Choose-Your-Own-Adventure or Pick-A-Path books from about 1990.  Somebody scanned them and put them online.  This is not a convenient time for me to look for them, so remind me to get them to you another week.
