Title of the topic relates to what pushed me into a motivation to write about "Rise of the Triad" in general, one of my more favorite shooters, and probably the most underrated shooter ever (I think "Trench Warfare" takes the same spot in Wolf3D mods).
Now, lately playing zDoom "ROTT" remake "Return of the Triad" (http://www.moddb.com/mods/return-of-the-triad) - I remembered why I love ROTT so much and why it has such a special part in my heart.
I met ROTT in a shareware games CD (I still own today) and fell in love with it right way. It took me many many many years to finally put my hand on the registered version - so I played ALOT of the shareware version, knowing every stone there by heart, every brick and every secret.
Shareware episode is unique and it not included at all at the full version - and those are great maps.
My favourite was second map where I loved to walk, stand, sit, just listening the great great calm music, and loving the great fog, the large open spaces and the feel of the map..which also had many cool weapons.
My second favourite was the night gravity map, those high jumps were amazing, sure for a game of that time...before came "Unreal Tournament" demo of a low gravity map. This was unique...and those torches....
Overall this is the best shooter ever for me, then - and even now in it's simply amazing zDoom remake with whole new maps and missions.
So many features it had for a first time...from gas mask to best gib effects of that time, from touchplates to heatseak missiles, from flying to jumping, from 8-dir scenery to fully destructable scenery.....I can go on and on and on....Multiplayer, including namy cool game modes....
It was the mod unique shooter, with most unique gameplay, look, best music on any old DOS shooter, coolest weapons, consistent mood, tons and tons of creativity........
List of it's unique and coolest things can fit a book... let's just note some:
1. Coolest music on any DOS Shooter or Dos game for that matter.
2. Coolest gibs of any DOS Shooter or Dos game for that matter. Including option for bigger gibs.
3. Best weapon selection in any DOS Shooter or Dos game for that matter, by favourite was "Split Missile"
4. Unique gameplay with large open areas, alot of jumping, fast pace........
5. Tons of traps and tricks, from gas to fire to spikes to blades to moving walls to lava to..........to........
6. Barery visible touchplates.
7. Cool Bosses
8. Tons of effects - gas mask, breakable glass, dog mode, mushroom mode, god mode, breakable objects, thrown net that holds you in place, Exallibat, moving and stationary touchplates...............
9. Very unique atmosphere, that doesn't take iself too seriously, yet is very realistic , surprising and intimidating.
10. Cool multiplayer options and game modes

Now "Return of the Triad" makes new levels, zDoom-engine-qualilty remake/features/mapping/multiplayer - while being faithful to the mood of original game - fast pace, large open areas, many jumps and traps, themes...alot of square designs embedded seemlessly within Doom-style walls and areas........every detail of the maps shouts "talent".
This is the best remake ever........so much love, so much talent, such great design and mapping that is much better than in the original ROTT...yet totally faithful and you feel like you play original ROTT only better....enhanced, but not changed, not altered, not despirited.
