I only watch mainstream music videos because of some of the girls. It's so hard to find a video clip from the 60's or 70's with some really steaming beautiful chicks in there. Sure, the dress was classier and all that, but... It's hard to relate to. Everything comes on a silver platter these days. Digital T&A by the dozen.

You're a Bee Gees fan, Brian. What's your take on the Odessa album?

Odessa is a very good double album, especially Marley Purt Drive, Lamplight and First of May. The whole set contained a lot of interesting ideas including Maurice taking lead vocal on one track. Putting Barry's First of May as the A side of a single caused a row with Robin who wanted his Lamplight as the A side. Robin left the group for a few years.

Marley Purt Drive sounds like a spoof on The Band. This departure from orchestrated baroque pop was very convincing, I admit. I also dig "Edison" and the title track - it's an incredible, overlooked gem, this. I like Maurice. Later stuff such as "On Time" and "Lay It on Me" makes it seem as if he always fancied himself as a country singer, though he did that beautiful ballad "You Know It's for You" on the To Whom It May Concern album - really dig that one. Songs such as "Alone" and the odd "Sweet Song of Summer"... That's just grand. I have to say I could easily see Lamplight as an A-side. It's more bombastic and "thorough" (somehow it reminds me of Harrison's Isn't It a Pity) than First of May, but you can't change history. Yeah, Robin left for 2 years roughly speaking but luckily came back. Though I have to say, Bee Gees' prime for me had to be 1967-69. I enjoy the 1972-74 period as well though, somehow, some interesting stuff there. The disco period had some fun hits but it's not exactly masterpieces.Schabbs wrote:Odessa is a very good double album, especially Marley Purt Drive, Lamplight and First of May.
