Mac-enstein Second Encounter SDL Version Released Mc_000sm
Andy Nonymous has released an SDL version of his 'Mac-enstein Second Encounter' mod. This new version is enhanced by the use of Ripper's Wolf4SDL engine, having improved digitized sounds and higher video resolution, plus a new color palette. It allows the music to be played on Windows ME and XP without the need for DOSBox or VDMSound. It is also Vista compatible. There are 30 well designed and well decorated levels. The graphics, sounds and music fit together well, and give a good emulation of the mac version. This is quite a good set from Andy and will especially suit those who haven't played the mac version before. Text file included. Available here.

I have tried the mac version and based on that I think the enemies, weapons and maps look and feel like the Mac versions, equipped the with Wolf4SDL engine, it even has the same original Mac resolution for both screen and textures. Those who can't get the Mac version to work but want to try it, this is the way to go. As far as gameplay and mapping is concerned, I think you're right on target. Good work!

Andy NonymousEnormous thank you from Russia!!! I for a long time dreamed to play in " Wolf-3d for Mac ". Now due to you a dream was carried out...Very Happy
Now I tell all about yours Mac-Enstein...
    http://forum.ixbt.com/topic.cgi?id=25:7352-14
It is the Russian forum. A theme " Wolf-3d 10 years!!! " It is begun in 2002..
    .
    Once again thanks you...Very Happy
    .
If it is possible a small questions:
    - Whether you will continue to work with "addon's Wolf-3d for Macintosh"?
    - What editor (in Windows) is better to use for creation of new map for "Mac-Enstein"?
    - You "Mac-Enstein" will correspond completely " Wolf-3d for Mac "?
    - The Macintosh version also has an auto-map. Whether there will be it in "Mac-Enstein"?
    - Whether you change the menu, prompts in game?
    .
    And....
It seemed to me that enemies cost
    in such position
(for example) Mac-enstein Second Encounter SDL Version Released 112
The reason of it absence in the version " Wolf3d for Mac " such script? Mac-enstein Second Encounter SDL Version Released 210

    Freek,

It's nice to hear you are enjoying Mac-enstein in Russia!

    >> - Whether you will continue to work with "addon's Wolf-3d for Macintosh"?

I am taking a bit of a break at the moment, and hope to work on some Mac-enstein addons
    eventually.

    >> - What editor (in Windows) is better to use for creation of new map for "Mac-Enstein"?

I personally use Mapedit, which is a DOS program, though it works in Windows 98. If you want to make maps, you can get the Mapedit data files here. You will also need new data files if you intend to use ChaosEdit, WDC, or FloEdit. They do not currently exist in these formats.

    >> - You "Mac-Enstein" will correspond completely " Wolf-3d for Mac "?
    >> - The Macintosh version also has an auto-map. Whether there will be it in "Mac-Enstein"?
    >> - Whether you change the menu, prompts in game?

I haven't really considered making it totally equivalent, it may take more work or talent than I can put into it. I may eventually look at what it would take to do. No promises, though!

As for your last question, there are no "standing" frames for any Mac actors. The smaller actors and dogs all start on the 4th walking frame, and the bosses start on walking frame 1. The Mac Wolfenstein engine is somewhat simpler than the PC version, and was based on the SNES version. I assume the standing frames were left out to save memory or time/effort on the part of the SNES Wolfenstein designers.

Mac-enstein Second Encounter SDL Version Released Empty Does anybody else have this problem?

Post by stathmk Mon Jun 23, 2008 6:33 pm

I am not making this up. I must have the weirdest computer virus, worm, trojan horse, sub-routine, or computer bug.

I have Windows XP instead of Macintosh.

I was playing Mac-enstein and made it to level 5-2. I was where there were two lines of barrels with SS behind them. Four SS were behind each line of barrels. If you've gotten to this level you know where I mean. On my way out of the room, BJ Blaskowics was shot to death. This was when things had gotten weird. It went to the Windows XP screen with my other windows and folders open, but the screen image was instantly rotated 90 degrees clockwise. The colors were a little off because it switched to a lower bit resolution. The Windows task manager was there and I had to do [CTRL][ALT][DELETE] to end Mac-enstein.

I've run Spyware Blaster, Lavasoft Ad-Aware, and Spybot Search & Destroy. Ad-Aware found one problem, but it must be unrelated because quarantining this bug didn't solve the problem.

I wanted to see what would happen if I went back into Mac-enstein. The screen rotates back temporarily, but only while I'm still running Mac-enstein.

I have restarted my computer three times and the screen image is still rotated. My screen is 768 by 1024, but it's across the screen the long way. I've moved files to a portable drive because I want to free up memory or resources on the C drive. I'm about to search the C drive to find and fix bad sectors. I will later defragment drive C.

Macintosh computer games are also programmed in C++, right? Could this be something with the Macintosh C++ code of Mac-enstein?

If you had the same problem, then send me a message to let me know what you did to fix it. I'm not enjoying typing this message sideways.

While I'm talking about errors, I had a different problem with Wolfenstein DX or Deluxe. When I would pick up a gold eagle or pot of gold, at the end of the sound effect it would exit out of the game. Wolfenstein DX didn't cause any permanent errors on the computer though.

Edit: Forgive the tone of the message. I don't mean this message as personal/character attacks against the makers of Mac-enstein or Wolfenstein DX.

Edit: It won't let me print either.

Mac-enstein Second Encounter SDL Version Released Empty Re: Mac-enstein Second Encounter SDL Version Released

Post by Andy Tue Jun 24, 2008 11:56 am

    Matthew,

Wow, that is a weird problem. I'm surprised a reboot doesn't clear it up. Did you try to change Windows' video resolution?

The oddest part is that running Mac-enstein corrects it. Does running Wolf4SDL do it too? How about Tricob's WolfDX? How about some other game/app that uses DirectX?

The code in Mac-enstein is merely the usual C++ tweaks. I didn't code anything that would affect the video other than disabling usage of other resolutions upon startup - only the default 640x400 is allowed. Ripper and I have thoroughly play-tested this (along with others) and never ran across anything like this. *If* this was caused by the mod, it may also happen with other SDL-based wolf games.

Could this possibly be a video card failure? DirectX or video driver corruption? Anyone hear of a virus doing this?

Try running the Directx Diagnostic tool (dxdiag.exe). You can launch it from the run window. Description of the DirectX Diagnostic Tool

I'll post info on this on DHW, where Ripper is likely to see it. He may have a better idea what could be happening.

Edit: This seems to be a common problem in WinXP: It seems that ctl-alt-arrow key can turn your screen around. Here are some links describing the problem. Try that, and if it works, it was nothing to do with Wolfenstein!

Mac-enstein Second Encounter SDL Version Released Empty Thanks, Andy.

Post by stathmk Tue Jun 24, 2008 3:44 pm

    Thanks, Andy.

Since last night, I checked bad sectors and defragmented. I tried the DirectX stuff that you told me to do. On the DirectX Sound tab, my sound card does not support hardware buffering!? I'm not sure what that's about since I haven't had any problems with the sound card.

I followed the information you gave me. My screen is back to normal now. I can't say the same about my printer. Since my printer still isn't working, then I think it's an unrelated problem.

I've beaten Mac-enstein Second Encounter. It has the UberMutant, Death Knight, and maybe Trans Grosse. I think it was 3-1 where I had found the secret level. The last level has Hitler.

Sorry, Trickle. The problem is not the Wolf4SDL version, but rather that Wolf4SDL does not support "hi-res" images in the VGA graphics. To overcome this limitation, I had to hard-code everything to 640x400 (twice the normal DOS resolution). If I allowed the player to choose different resolutions, the VGA items (status bar, menus, intermission, etc.) would get very messed up.

the only reason I care is because anything below 640x480 can't go above 75hz on my comp. I have all my games set at 85hz and I'm so use to it that anything lower starts to strain my eyes for some reason.

You know what would be cool? Using the original music from the Mac version in OGG format (not MP3 for those pauses that the format add at the start and end of the file, thus screwing up the looping of the music and WAV requires an excesive amount of size to work). Somebody did that with a Wolf3D mod (called Project X) using Wolf4SDL, so it's perfectly possible, I would do it, but I have never played around with a source code (less compiling one) nor I have the music, but it is a good idea, I think.
