XP Home vs XP Pro? Empty XP Home vs XP Pro?

Post by SandieK Wed Jul 16, 2008 3:25 pm

Recently I got a new computer with XP Pro. Now, I can no longer play my Wolf3D addons without the assistance of DosBox (allegedly...I havent tried yet). On my former machine, an Acer laptop with XP home, I had no issues with getting any of the addons to run on thier own without any 'outside' DOS assistance. Now it gets to a certain point, and just stops.

Yes, I could just use dosbox, but it doesnt run full screen. Okay, so it does, but not very well. Theres lag in other programs.
    Any ideas?

    You could:
    -increase the framerate/cycles of Dosbox
-try Virtual Box or Virtual Pc
-format the hard-disk and install another windows
-create a 2nd partition (or use 2nd hard-disk) and install windows XX on it
-use the newwolf or 4sdl exe for mods which don't have code changes
-run a mod without dosbox and pray for a miracle
-port all dos mods to the wolf4SDL code
-shoot your pc and dance around it

I have never used the Home editions of Windows. I started using Windows with 2000, and have always used the Pro versions. Until now I didn't play Wolf3D because I had stored the disks away and forgot about them. When I found them again, I ran the games as-is. The game would display in full-screen, but the quality was bad due to the artifacting used to get the full-screen size. The sounds wouldn't play at all. I downloaded DosBox and have been playing ever since.

I use DosBox and let the game run in a window. The resolution in the window is better than I remember it being on the DOS pc I used before (386). Thing to remember is that the resolution of your screen is much greater than it was under DOS. The smaller size in the window is really about the same size as the whole screen was under dos (my screen is 1024x768, as compared to 640x480 on a 386, and 640x400, which is what W3D used as its screen size originally).

    Hope that helps.

LOL. I just noticed that I replied to a 2-year old topic.

No, this is defiantly not just because you got XP Pro. This happened to XP Home on both of my comptuers, in which I gotta use Dosbox.
