Abandon 2020: Released!

Here's something I threw together over the past week. Essentially, my first mod the way I always wanted it to be. If anybody remembers Abandon, it definitely had a lot of shortcomings, including a nonsensical storyline in horribly written English, a confusing mixture of sprites and a poor sense of guard placement and differences in difficulty.

Abandon 2020 fixes all that. And what are the contents?

* 60 seamless levels (50 originals and 10 of the 11 levels from Abandon v0.0 - omitted from the 2020 version is E2M2)
* Increased ammo rate (500 - should come in handy)
* More variation in ceiling colors and a new music order
* A handful of the "new" sprites I tacked on near the end of the mod's making are there; but it is more or less a "deluxe" map set of sorts, very much in style with original Wolf3D
* A rock-solid Wolf4SDL EXE thanks to AlumiuN

For this project I have made no new levels. All levels originally appeared in Abandon or Abandon v0.0, though I have had my hands on all of the levels. None of the levels had proper floor code placement, and almost all of them had guard placement and variation that left a lot to be desired. The odd wall may look out of place... Some guards may still be put in awkward positions... But bear in mind this was my very first effort, I was 13 when I made this and had no experience, knowledge (or the balls to ask for either of this back then) of editors and the Wolfenstein 3D engine. I just wanted to make maps and have fun.

I hope people get a kick out of this, at least I feel quite satisfied in that most levels are now playable and fair in terms of difficulty - ammo and health pickups were severely lacking when it was originally released. The reasons why the mod turned out like it did is explained in the attached Read Me file. To me this project was more therapeutic than it was something I felt had to be done, it all started when I wanted to check out just how bad the floor code placement was and then it just started to unravel. I had to fix the whole damn thing... So if the player has that in mind, then I think it will be a worthwhile experience to play.

Been 2 months i played some new mod. Going to try this.

Just downloaded it, fired it up, and ran around a bit. Cant wait to try it, but wanna finish game I'm playing first. I don't think I ever played your original version. Replaying one of Majik Monkees old games right now. I keep fun games and play them year after year. Thanks for the new toy!

Ill probably try it out soon I always love me some new Wolfenstein challenges after all.

13 yrs old huh? Amazing. Lotsa great hidden tricks. Cool artwork I havnt seen before. Got stuck on Level 30 tho. Shot boss, got gold key, found door, but no working elevator. Been around map several times, but cant find other secret passages.

This set has been updated with that bug rectified. If you want, e-mail me your saved game and I will port you to level 31. Sorry for not posting the update here. I live under a rock. And a heavy one at that!

I got a different problem though.

Level 18. I found all the secret doors, and still it says "86 % secret", "93 % (or something like that) kills". And I am 100% sure that I killed all "staff".

There are so many bugs in the game that i had to edit few levels to play them with 100% stats. There are 60 levels but i stopped after playing 40 levels. Bored of editing buggy levels. Thomas didn't respond to the bugs i specified. He might be busy in his life.

That might explain my "problem". Thank you, my friend.

Sharing something from my play: I killed the boss (I think it's General Fettgesicht?) of level 20 in the room with health and ammunition. =oD Luckily, I was able to finish the level because of a saved game in a state *before* that. But it's quite hilarious.

Gracias por contestar. Ya maté al boss y cogí la llave, pero como tú bien dices el ascensor está muerto, por eso estoy preguntando por aquí a ver si alguien me da una respuesta o si no tendré que dejar el juego.

It was uploaded April 23, 2020 on Wolfsource. People remember the concept of patches at all? Even EoD had it.

I downloaded file again and overwritten on my game folder. Game still got so many bugs. For example, in level 43 i remember, after few steps forward walk from starting position on right side you gave a pushwall with wealth inside but you blocked the pushwall entry with a drum. I edited game map with hwe and removed that drum to access pushwall. I was bored of editing so many bugs and deleted game.

I think that's level 44. I still got that problem, i. e. a drum before the pushwall. After overwriting the files with the updated version.

Do you think you are smart enough to decide that i am feeling proud of myself for editing buggy levels ? After i informed first bug in this game Thomas did not reply for weeks. He was inactive. I continued to play game because i liked it and trying to get 100% stats in each level. Those bugs stopped me to get full stats. So i started editing the impossible to reach treasure in some levels. Later i was bored of editing because editing is spoiling the meaning of game and stopped playing. After i saw the Thomas post that he cleared bugs i started playing again where i left but still there are bugs. I don't want to edit each level like that so i deleted the game. The last best mod by Thomas was "wolf kowtow". I appreciated him for that and he knows there is no disrespect from me. Who are you to decide i am proud or disrespectful ? Buy some brains.
