Beyond Mutantstein SE Anniversary Edition Released
'Beyond Mutantstein SE Anniversary Edition 2002-2012' released!

This is the (tenth) anniversary edition of Beyond Mutantstein Special Edition, the tribute game to John Bucksnort released on 25 December 2002.

A decade has now passed and with SoD/Wolf3D being 20 years old, John's mods still remain usual favourites or -in the worst case- true referents of a very distinctive style of modding.

In spite of the various modifications that were made upon the original tribute set (primarily involving some minor code and graphic tweaks), this product should be seen, mainly, as a new set of maps to our decade-old mod.

This 10-year anniversary consists of 19 levels involving 18 different mappers (quite possibly and unprecedentedly large number of different architects in a single mod?). It was basically decided that priority should be given to those who worked on the first Beyond Mutantstein Special Edition back in 2002 (and who were still present in the scene or otherwise reachable), to the remaining Bucksnorts, and then to the more experienced/advanced mappers in the community. Hopefully the end result will have been to your satisfaction and, as said by someone involved in the original mod released back in 2002, something that John would have been proud of.

Hopefully you will enjoy this tribute game to John Bucksnort!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of you and your beloved ones.

    Available here. Vista/Windows 7-compatible.

Haven't played much of it but want to throw out a few comments:

-Level 2 and Level 1 should be interchanged, because Level 2 is perfect very short first level material. Very small nitpick.
-Eighteen normal levels each by a different author is indeed a possibly unprecedented achievement and really stars the idea "if you don't like one level, the next will be different". Poet is a good author to reuse for a secret level [accessed from his main level no less, and just like the original BMSE Poet is also a perfect choice IMO for the penultimate level(s)].
-Guards pushing pushwalls is super-cool. I don't even recall the first BMSE having this.
-Looking at the eighteen mappers: I didn't even know the other Bucksnorts were still lurking around and TOTALLY didn't see Harry Sr. coming (I think the last thing he made is like five years ago or something!). I guess he probably just saw this project and decided to request a mapslot and subsequently got one since he had work in the first BMSE and thus would get priority. It's equally cool to have a WSJ map in here. And finally, who are Danial Walley and Hair Machine? I have never heard of them before in the slightest. Do they have any other released work(s)?

Will have to dig into this before I post more, but wanted to get those couple comments/questions in right off the bat.

Daniel Walley is AReyeP's son. Hair Machine has contributed graphics etc to some mods mainly from a few years ago.

I think one of the reasons why the first level is put there is because it has the mutant opening a pushwall feature. This feature was in the opening level of the original.

Well I've played the first two levels. The first level was very good, typical Arielus quality, though unusually hard for a first level. The second level was very short and simple and really should have been the first but oh well, I understand the reasoning.

Checking pars, the par for Level 2 is 50 seconds (which I beat in a second run of the level). No other level is under 3 minutes (and only Level 3 and 15 are under 5 minutes).

I did see Hair Machine made some music (along with Tricob, who didn't get a map slot in here [too busy with his own project I guess]) for the DHW TC.

Still wonder how Harry Sr. just re-appeared out of nowhere. His last release of any kind was like 2007 I think! Bobby Bucksnort has been just as long, but given it's a Bucksnort dedication his participation obviously doesn't surprise me.
