I think SDL kis great and any future mods or add-ons for Wolf3d should be on SDL. I really think Dos Wolf3d is... obselete.

Re: What do you think of SDL?
My only beef with SDL is that I have not been able to customize the keyboard controls to my liking. I use the keypad to play. For example, I have been using the number five key to move forward, insert to shoot, the plus sign to open, and I cannot use these keys anymore for whatever reason. I am one old dog that doesn't feel like learning any new tricks especially since I have been playing Wolf the same way for 15+ years

have a break, have a bit-bat
Bring it on hehe. I'm living in a dos galaxy. I will spit out dos mods until I break the 640k limit and the universe ends in a fatal 404 error.Bright_wizzie wrote:I really think Dos Wolf3d is... obselete.
SDL is kinda nice and quite useful now. I'm gonna stick anways to the dust version. Brilliant slowness by putting heavy dos codes into the dosbox parallel universe but well this here isn't also the pink bunny planet. Who knows if sdl stuff works in near future after the apocakylpse 2012. Maybe same problems will occur like with dos now and it will be eaten by black bitholes. The wolf3d engine is rewritten and it got some very little changes in general. Somehow it's not the same for me. Not the same retro atmoshpere like the dos stuff got. Dust 2 dust, bit 2 byte and dos 2 retro.

I like it. For the only reason that you have more memory (finally). But like Nex said in his ever poetic way-there's nuthin' like the old thing...

What I think of SDL
I love SDL because it opens up possibilities that the DOS engine cannot handle.
That said, I think "simpler" mods should be released in both formats. To ignore the DOS-loving wolf fans would be a mistake. Overall interest in wolf modding/playing seems to be diminishing, and we don't want to be accelerating that trend!
In some cases, like KFH Games' future mods, supporting both engines would be too much extra work. I guess that's an acceptable reason to jettison DOS, though I personally would try to to develop both engines in parallel in my projects if possible. I love the challenge of seeing how far I can push the old DOS engine.
The only downsides to SDL that I see are that the DOS side of things can get ignored and that it allows massive overdevelopment and complexity to be introduced to that charming little engine that could, possibly morphing one's mod into a very un-wolf3d-like monstrosity. But some like it that way...
My two cents,
Andy
