I never played the entire mapset, but by classic style, I assume you mean vallina wolf3d, not an attempt to copy ID software's mapping. As ack said, with traditional mapping, it's the barebones. You don't have any fancy coding to hide behind. Either your mapping is good or it isn't. I also want more variety in mapping - by that I specifically mean from different authors. My mapping is obviously influenced, and looking at what other people come up with (and vice versa) helps both of us to map better.
I wouldn't be against an idea of a mapset with as many authors as possible, just to see how drastically the flow/decoration/style/difficulty/general feeling can change depending on the author considering that no drastic coding changes were done.
