Der Mantel Des Teufels (The Devil's Cloak)

Post by Airslide on Thu May 24, 2007 5:12 pm

The Spear is gone...Hitler's minions, Schabbs, Hanz, Gretel, and the others are dead. The Allies push forward through Europe victoriously, and the imminent end is in sight...

But Hitler has one last trick up his sleeve, something that if it succeeds, could end the war in his favor. The Angle of Death, the one you, BJ, have destroyed, was only one of thousands...the Devil's breathren. And now, through the others, Hitler has made a pact with the Devil himself - the souls of his soldiers, himself, and eventually the world for one thing...the Devil's Cloak. While it is unsure what this thing does, it is rumored to give the user great power and close to if not invincibility...

You will be smuggled aboard a German supply truck on a routine trip to the renewed Castle Wolfenstein. You'll be entering a seperate section of the Castle, connected to the main castle via an underground tunnel network. It's the closest we can get you, but you'll still have to navigate through the tunnel network and across the castle to get to the place French Resistance operatives have pin-pointed the Devil's Cloak. Because you'll be smuggled into a heavily guarded area, we're taking no chances on extra equipment, so we're giving you a German P38 so you can use the common 9mm ammunition. And good luck, you'll need it.

I'm trying to decide whether I should keep the German translation of The Devil's Cloak for the title or use English. Regardless, here is the current engine progress (very, very little progress has been made graphicly and in mapping):

    Current Features
*Long, Smooth Bloodsplats (Images from ROTT)
*Multi Floors and Ceilings via 3rd & 4th planes
*Best Weapon - Only have weapons you picked up (Good one from Brother Tank)
*Enemies Enter Pain States Less Often
*SS Shoots once per required shot (like Doom Chaingunner)
    *Rocket Launcher
    *Directional Sprites
    *Many Wolfenstein 3D bug fixes
    *Wall Patches
    *Switch Activated Pushwalls
    *In Game Messages w/Border
    *Gun Switch Movement (Like EOD)
*Frame Rate Counter (Will be Debug Mode Only)
*Weapon Damage (And pistol is more powerful than machinegun shot per shot!)
*Some other stuff that I keep forgetting...

No screenshots yet, as there is very little in the way of graphics or anything else to show.

This mod is for Spear of Destiny, however unlike my previous mod it will be stand-alone and will not require the original Spear of Destiny

Here's a screenie. Nothing special, but managed to get the sky to be drawn with flats. No walls have been changed (except for the floor/ceilings) and I've only added some sprites, not changed any yet. But I'm making progress fast.

Some more pics. I've replaced all the walls with ones from Spear Res or EOD, as I can't make walls worth squat. I may replace them with new ones later, but its nice to have substitues meanwhile.

Lovely fireballs! Sprites temporarily from EOD.

Scorch mark left by fireballs (wall patch)

Wouldn't want to be that guy right now...

I'm not quite satisfied with the exterior/interior transition yet, but I'm working on it.

There's much more already in the engine that I can't really show without you playing.

    Also, some features recently added:
    *Exploding Barrels
*Splash damage on rockets for rocket launcher
*WL_Hack's moveable objects (useful for blocking firewalls if no switch can be found!)

Figured I'd call my base engine something, since I plan on doing what WL_HACK does - using 1 engine for all my mods, with little changes to make each unique. I'm trying to stay away from features that can't be controlled by the map and such, meaning this will be a really nice base engine.

They aren't editors - they are Game Creation applications. FPSC being the real easy one (to use, not to be good at Razz ).

Sorry I'm too technical Very Happy

EDIT: I continue to be lacking enough smilies! I declare a national (forumial?) emergency for lack of smilies! So rather than one expect a couple dozen new GIF's in your PM inbox.....hehe...

I figured I'll probably revive this. I'm gonna have to sort through some old backups and my portable hard-drive to find the source code again but I have some interesting ideas for it.

One new feature I have planned is weapon attachments - while there is already a silencer that you can activate for the pistol by pressing the pistol key again (press 2 to select pistol, press 2 again to select silencer) I *might* make an entire attachment system, so you'll be able to find scopes, bayonets ect. Though for this project I'll probably limit it to the silencer (toggleable) and a scope for the rifle (automatic if you have it, just increases accuracy).

Some new screenies! No new maps and not much in the way of graphics, but I have been working with the code. First off, it now essentially uses VSYNC, waiting for your monitor to fully refresh before drawing the next frame - at the cost of some performance (it will cut down to about the sync rate of your monitor) it removes those annoying gray flashes.

Also, not only can you have full screen w/status bar (just no border), you can also have true full screen! Using the "true fullscreen" will not work with Win XP unless your running with VDM sound or presumably DOSBOX, still trying to figure out why. Anyways, here's some pics:

Ever thought of making those numbers smaller? >_<
or maybe just to make it like in doom with those little icons or something like that. I think it will be far much better than those BIG numbers Smile

They're just temporary, the ones from the status bar itself. I'll be replacing them with smaller ones soon Smile

Big changes! I'm using Trench Warefare weapon sprites (may not make the final version, but I do plan on using this particular method of "high-res" weapon sprites), and did alot of changes to SimpleScaleShape. Scaling is no longer dependant on height (looks better for gun switching) and it makes my life alot easier for HUD sprites. New screenie:

Here's the hud now Very Happy

The medkit/clip icons are actually the game sprites, so when I get around to changing those the hud will change aswell. The keys (upper right) and numbers are specific to the hud.

EDIT: I've also been thinking about modifying the story. For one, I think I'll change the main character to a defecting German officer who seeks an asylum in the US. Once you discover that you've probably been found out, you have to go steal some important documents that include information on the whereabouts and operations of Dr. Schabbs (in other words, you become the informant who gives the French resistance the location of Dr. Schabbs who in turn give it to BJ). It'll still include the Devil's cloak an all, but will focus on smaller things for the first part of the game.

Re: Der Mantel Des Teufels (The Devil's Cloak)

Post by Airslide on Sun Dec 09, 2007 7:57 pm

    New story:

The Spear is gone...Hitler's minions, Schabbs, Hanz, Gretel, and the others are dead. The Allies push forward through Europe victoriously, and the imminent end is in sight...

But Hitler has one last trick up his sleeve, something that if it succeeds, could end the war in his favor. The Angle of Death, the one that BJ himself had destroyed, was only one of thousands...the Devil's children. And now, through the others, Hitler has made a pact with the Devil himself - the souls of his soldiers, himself, and eventually the world for one thing...the Devil's Cloak. While it is unsure what this thing does, it is rumored to give the user great power and close to if not invincibility...

You are a defecting German officer seeking an asylum in the United States after witnessing the madness of Dr. Schabbs and Hitler himself first hand. Your best friend, an officer of equivalent rank, volunteered to become one of Schabbs super-humans an experiment that failed horrendously. Worried about the possibility of being drafted into the program yourself or the future you would have if the Allies won the war, you decided to betray your home country in favor of life. To prove your worth you have been smuggling information to French resistance informants for the past month. Now, realizing youve probably been discovered, you relay a call for help to a resistance member. You are to meet up with them in a distant farming field for transport to the French coast, where youll be shipped via submarine to the United States. But before going there is one thing that you know you must find if your future in the United States is to last the plans to Dr. Schabbs evil machines and where hes doing his work.
