I think it's called Majini Monkey's image world or something like that. Has lots of free sprites.

I am almost certain that the Wolfenstein Data Compiler is a better bet if not simply because it is still in (albeit slow) active development and can actually be found on the website of its creator:

    http://winwolf3d.dugtrio17.com/index.php

No, it doesn't have 3D preview or anything like that, but having used both I find myself recommending WDC more than I would ChaosEdit. Obviously it is a personal choice, and people have their own reasons for doing things. In any event, WDC does much the same as ChaosEdit - replacing sprites, sounds, graphics, mapping and many other things while also being a bit easier to use (in my opinion, anyway).

What I don't like about WDC is that you need a C++ program to compile and save your work whether you edit the mod or make a new one.

I only use it to listen to IMF music in mods that cannot be heard on Chaosedit.

The main thing I like about WDC is the error checking utility. Often times in a level, I've misplaced floor codes or put a bucket in a wall. It also has ability to edit larger than default levels, nice but I don't need to.

I am still a fan of Chaosedit though, because I'm used to it and the 3d edit. I also think it's easier to use for some reason. WDC gets updated, yes, less than once a year. Beats nothing though, but this is a slow pace seeing as to how Omnibots for Enemy Territory (Wolfenstein) gets updated once every week or so. (Small updates) It's not directly comparable, but still.

You do? Are you sure? Where did you hear that? Might you be mistaking the VB6 run-time environment (which relates to the Visual Basic runtimes, not the MSVC ones) requirement for requiring a C++ compiler? Because otherwise, the official site lists no such requirement to utilize their software. I've never been prompted to provide a path to either Wolf3d/Wolf4SDL source code or a compiler/linker binary.

Well Zin, let's say I want to edit a mod to my liking and I want to save the changes I've made. I could save the project as and it turns into some file I'm not familiar with and I don't know how that works or what to do to make the file work on the mod.

The next options are to compile all of the code or to rebuild the VGADICT file and it needs a C++ program to do so. Trust me, I've explored that part of it.

I've tried a little Wolf4SDL coding myself in the past but I lost the motivation eons ago.

Which may well be for modding a mod (inb4 yo dawg). For just editing Spear/Wolf3D as-is, you do not need any manner of toolchain. But WDC (and even ChaosEdit) weren't meant to edit mods really, so the lack of functionality there isn't terribly surprising.

Interesting. I can edit mods no problem on Chaosedit except when it comes to music.

Now I'm gonna try to resurrect my motivation to make Wolf3d mods through ECWolf, but without video tutorials on how to code with that particular engine and how to do them through the Slade editor, Blzut's slide tutorials do not make any sense to me.

Problem is (if there were video tutorials) once I get a grasp of how to work with the Slade editor, WDC is another roadblock for me since I've never used it for other than listening to IMF music I can't hear on Chaosedit.

Last update on Havoc's site was in September of 2011. I'd say development has probably stalled as that update was 0.3.2 and the only version available on the site for download is 0.3.2.

That's too bad. I'm a fan of reading changelogs. Chaosedit is dead, HWE is dead, and let's face it, with the rate in which WDC is updated, it's practically dead. These are capable editors, but it's not a good sign.

Well, Wolf3d isn't G/ZDoom, it isn't something that is evolving at any real rate. The tools that do exist are both well-designed and do their job excellently - a rarer thing than one might actually think! That said, considering what Wolf3d is, we shouldn't consider a lack in tool development as a sign of decline when mods and TCs are still being developed and released fairly frequently. When those drop off is when we should be worried. Remember, people used a relatively basic and seldom-updated set of tools for years before Florian Stohr came up with the idea of an all-in-one editor (which wasn't exactly the recipient of frequent updates either). And even then it was still a while before any other such editors came onto the scene. All the while, however, mods were and have been frequently released.

That is a tough question with no definite answer. I really hate to answer your question with another question but...Are the currently available WDC and ChaosEdit packages outdated enough to warrant such a thing? They both have their odd bugs and glitches, however, they are not so profound as to hinder efforts or otherwise prevent a modder from creating a top-quality mod or TC (like FloEdit was). I think "don't reinvent the wheel" applies here. This isn't the kind of thing which requires the software to be on the bleeding edge of development to actually be successful. WDC and ChaosEdit are both successful editors in so far that they perform their functions adequately and without any real issues. As Wolf3d and Wolf4SDL exist today, the available tools are more than enough for even the most demanding mod maker.

Yes, it would certainly be interesting to have a true all-in-one suite whereby all of the tools needed to make a complete TC are integrated into one application, but that, I think, is being more than demanding and overly ambitious. The development of such an application is prohibitively time consuming given the size of our community. Just look at how long it has taken Game Maker to get where it is now. And given the level of tool integration we see with WDC and ChaosEdit, the only real direction to take would be something along those lines. But given their stability as they stand now, such a thing, in my opinion, isn't warranted.

I've also ran that question in my mind. My conclusion is that it's not nessesary (but then again, what is actually nessesary?), but it would be quite nice to have a perfect tool both in usability and power. Not going to go crazy over not having that, it's a pet peeve of mine.

Exactly, people used MapEdit and WolfEdit for *years*. I think a lot of people still do use MapEdit for the fact that adding new map symbols is, by far, the easiest in that program.

I for one have always used MapEdit (4.2 and then 8.4/5) ever since I started modding. I've just stuck with it.

I only use WDC for music. Had I not used MapEdit for years and years beforehand, I'm sure that WDC would've been the editor of my choice. It's all very good, lots of work adding sprites is spared by using the folder paths as "replacement files" etc. - WDC is a genius editor. But personally I only use MapEdit, ChaosEdit for graphics, and if I should find editing the AUDIOT necessary, I use WDC.

But I'm not slamming it. WDC is the one way to go.

HWE isn't dead. In fact, I've just released a new version yesterday that fixes some bugs. I haven't much time to work on it at present, though, because I'm neck-deep in other more important things.

This is my personal computer and website. I have a mirror for it there. The download is crap most likely. But I may throw it on mediafire or something so there is a way to get the program again.

I think it moved to here:
    http://www.alice-dsl.net/mkroll/

Looks like the ChaosEdit download links aren't working, but the links for the source code is fine.
