    DOS Box

Post by Dark_wizzie on Fri Jul 05, 2013 5:23 am

I vaguely remember reading somebody saying that running End of Destiny on Dosbox is supposed to be super laggy and computer demanding. I'm sitting here with my new computer and it's running less than 1% of cpu cycles and I'm not lagging. So... I guess I read wrongly?

Seriously? o.o I'd expect some detectable CPU strain at least... So other people lag with EoD on Dosbox?

At 141,000 gameplay is still fine but not perfect since it uses 25% cpu.
At 120,000, gameplay is absolutely perfect. Uses 0-6% of CPU. (That is a huge jump in cpu usage for those 20,000 cycles!)
At 100,000, gameplay is still just fine. Using 0-1% of CPU.

By 32000, gameplay is tolerable but choppy. Feels like I'm playing at 30fps with crappy AMD drivers. Of course, CPU usage is at an undetectable 0%. This was my original setting when I made the thread.
At 10000, the lag is pretty bad. This kind of lag would turn me off from Wolf3d mods on Dosbox forever, no exceptions. It's playable but not enjoyable.
At 3000, the game is pretty much unplayable unless you have a mental disorder.

120,000 is definitely where I want to be for this particular mod... I forget I'm playing Dosbox, feels like I'm playing SDL. I'm pretty picky when it comes to game detail/framerate though so you might not notice 140-100k cycles having a difference.
Yes, the 4670k is still a 4 core. I have single-threaded bottlenecks for Wolfenstein Enemy Territory because I run like 30-50 bots and it all runs on one core. Oblivion is mostly single-threaded. Skyrim is also more CPU dependent, which is why I OCD more about CPU overclock than my friends.

    Windows 7 64bit
    i5-4670k 3.4ghz overclocked to 4.4ghz
    8gb DDR3-1866 ram downclocked to 1600
    256gb Samsung Pro Series SSD
    7970 GHZ Edition 3gb

When I was at 35,000, the game felt OK, a little choppy but perfectly serviceable. It's not until I decide to go way up in the cpu cycles that I realized my gameplay wasn't as smooth as it can be unless I turned it up more. Maybe it's the same with you?

I get no noticeable difference in performance from full screen to windowed BUT the image quality of full screen is atrocious. I'm running an IPS 2560 x 1440 panel and stretching the game out to that size (and not the entire screen due to aspect ratio) introduces tons of ailising and pixelation.

Actually, Haswell is good for different people. For me it's mostly a disappointment for the same reason it might be a godsend for you. You seem to like laptops... I'm a desktop, super-performance geek kindda guy. Intel has been focusing most of their attention on mobile computing... After Sandy Bridge anyways. Intel gimped desktop users with their crappy thermal gunk used inside the CPU which is only a problem for desktop overclockers. On Haswell they up the game by providing new features for laptops... low power states (so it uses a really puny amount of power when doing nothing)... lower power usage in general, etc. But all this improvements on power and mobile meant the desktop version got gimped and doesn't overclock as well and gets hotter when overclocked. The desktop version of the cpu is still way more powerful than the laptop version, make no mistake, but it's frustrating to me when a CPU from 2 generations ago can be overclocked to have similar performance as my CPU right now.

The AMD offering is a good lower-end option if you don't have the funds because its CPU itself has a half-usable GPU onboard unlike Intel's, so you can do some light gaming without problems.

Of course, upgrading from my 08' machine... while my 08' machine had the legendary Q6600/SLI 8800gt, they were godly for their time. But it's not 2008 anymore and a $200 Haswell is a huge upgrade over my Q6600... I ran 4k nodes per second at chess now I run 13-14k nodes per second at chess. That's... over x3 improvement. Anyways, if you're interested, I'll be posting the last pictures of my new computer build later today and typing out all of my benchmarks and data and computer stuff in my computer thread.

Do you actually bother to play Wolf3d on Dosbox with 10k cycles? Prolly with original wolf3d.

    EDIT:
Oh yeah, by laptops I mean a real laptop, not an 11 inch netbook or Ultrabook. Keep in mind netbooks/ultrabooks are generally weaker (especially netbooks) than normal laptops, and desktop cpus are stronger than laptop cpus. Also keep in mind I overclocked my CPU from 3.4ghz to 4.4ghz. I suspect a 4670k in desktop without overclocking can still hit 100k cycles without problem instead of my 120-140k... so that's more than enough to get a enjoyable experience in EoD. I'm assuming EoD is the most demanding for Dosbox out of all mods?

Well, I don't care about the cycles in general, I run everything on DOSBox on max cycles, so I don't bother to set it to a particular value.

P.S. You had a Q6600? Well, asof now, I'm running a Q9300... at least before I upgrade my PC Razz

Q9300 is superior to Q6600 but keep in mind Q6600 was released 2 years before Q9300!

On the bad side, my 6600 was stuck at 2.73ghz due to horrible vdroop from crappy Nvidia chipset. It was the g0 variety too, primed to overclock. I could run on 2.79 on some games though.
What are the rest of your specs?
