Top ten for SDL! Empty Top ten for SDL!

Post by WolfForever Mon Sep 17, 2012 10:54 pm

What are your favorite ten Wolfenstein/SOD add-ons that can be played with SDL (thus including anything with just a GAMEMAPS and MAPHEAD file)?

List up to ten, more if you have additional thoughts, less if you can't distinguish that many favorites.

Again, the restriction on this is it must be available to be played free of bugs in SDL. Anything else goes!

Oh, and the more recent stuff (since start of 2011, i.e. past 20 months) the better but any year can be listed.

Totengraeber, Schabbs 2000 (when I had it as a tester), Spear Reloaded, Spear Resurrection, Castle Totenkopf, Absence, SonderKommando Revolt, The Die Hard Wolfers' TC, Operation Letzterschutz, and then either Ipank's or Wizzie's map set. You pesky kids!

Yes, it also first came into my mind just as I was about to hit 'Send'. I think that's a shame. It's an extremely good mod, I really need to play this again.

How about the DHW sets for Wolfesntein and SoD (not the TC)? I'd think those are very high up

I personally prefer sets that go well hand in hand. 'Contests' haven't really got much continuity in them, seeing that they're made by various people. The only notable exception for me would be the DHWTC - mainly because, in my opinion, that the sprites and music are all wholly new, it all blends together.

    Absence SDL
    Castle Totenkopf SDL Edition
Guns and Glory 0.5 The Story Retold SDL
    Spear Resurrection SDL
    Thomas Wolfenstein 3-D Mapset
    Time to Kill
    Spear Reloaded
    DieHard Wolfers TC SDL

Quick thoughts, from what I've played:

Spear Ress. 10 year - Haven't played but pretty clear it's a no-brainer and that is pretty much true for the original Spear Ress. as well.
Op: Letzterschutz - Playing this when it was Dos only, but loved it.
Absense - A bit repetitive in a few points, but highly solid sci-fi special story well realized. Enjoyed it a lot.
Totenkopf SDL - I wish the bugs could have gone but otherwise this was absolutely magnificent work.
    G & G 0.5 - Haven't played enough though it looks cool.
Thomas' Wolfenstein 3D - Haven't actually played but if it succeeds at being on par with the original it's in the list!
Tome to Kill - Haven't played, but it's from Thomas, they almost always interest me (I couldn't get caught on to 10 New Ones as quickly however).
Spear Reloaded - Awesome, and very hard. Ridiculously anti-climatic ending is pretty forgivable. I wish Wolfenstein Reloaded would get an improvement treatment one of these days!
DHW TC - Played one episode, which I mostly enjoyed, though I'd argue that the actual map quality in the SoD and Wolf3D sets is superior to these maps, but they're pretty well mapped nonetheless and tons of new features add to things.

    The spoiler only list:
Batman vs. Bane - Haven't played, but all the evidecne indicates it's outstanding. Not really fair to list your own mod as a favorite, but I guess it slides with ronwolf doing the levels.
Klooni - Successfully captured the Doom feeling to me. I can forget it's Wolfenstein. Supply balance is a bit patchy and there's one or two little bugs, but they can be overlooked and you should be supplied okay if you avoid starting levels from scratch.
medEvil and Op: Hund. - Majik Monkee mods, I'm not sure Hund. really interested me that much. medEvil was pretty good, but not Letzterschutz level. It was the Dos version I played though. Why no OMS mentions?
Big Time Gangsta - Haven't really heard much of it, and doesn't sound like something that would appeal to me.
Frayed - Not a fan of the level design.
Unsung - Not played, heard it has downsides but very unique and pretty strong overall to most opinions. And it had a 1.1 update since then.
Wolfendoom - Not played, but Areyep can always deliver solid fun, even his earlier works. That Wolfendoom II title should never have been used.
Project: X - Could not stand the level design, sorry.

    @Thomas:
-I don't know of Schabbs 2000 having an SDL version.
-Sonder will never be publicly released so probably should not have been mentioned.
-Ipank and Wizzie sets: Mostly good, but not outstanding. I think "This Spear" (a Wizzie set) is the best of the bunch.
    -Totengraeber: Absolute classic, 'nuff said.

Surprised these have had no mention:
-DHW SoD and Wolf3D sets. They got very good mapping (and/or little doubt in my mind they don't). And the Wolf3D does tend to stay consistent within episodes since all but one are single-authored.
    -OMS sets, as mentioned above
-Wolfenstein Sextilogy, three very solid episodes and too bad it may never be finished to six.
-Conflict in the Fatherland. Converted to SDL compatible in 2011. Huge classic for an original game remake, hardly ever have I heard anything negative about it.
-NovoWolf (on doomjedi's part, since Thomas wouldn't favorite his own work).
-There are many sets that use only new GAMEMAPS and MAPHEAD files (where you need everything else from the original), and those would all be playable in SDL, but I'm not surprised only Thomas' Wolf3D was mentioned since these are implied to work in SDL, and they aren't sets that were made for SDL or SDL conversions.
-Did I mention I would LOVE to see Orb of Dilaaria SDL someday? This is far and away the remaining set I think is in the most desperate need of getting converted.

It's quite underrated (just like "DeathTrigger"), nice original ideas, art...

I'm not much of a fan Smile I can preciate some sides of it though.

MCS Amsterdam made a version which was as good as done, he wanted final approval from Gary and received it, but it's been difficult corresponding with him via e-mail. It was fun though. He's also a prog rock fan. Hopefully it'll be out there at some point, 'cause it's done. And all levels from 9 to 49 show end level stats. I beta tested it thru and thru, and I was very honored to have MCS contacting me - in his words, I knew that game like the palm of my hand - which is mostly true.

Let ACTA do the censoring, and let us post whatever the hell we want. If you want to nanny about, come over to Scandinavia. It's funny as f!ck.

    Batman vs Bane SDL

I'm personally really happy with how this mod turned out. Go play it everyone! #shamelessselfpromotion

Guns and Glory 0.5 The Story Retold SDL

The projectile based shooting really significantly alters the gameplay, in a good way!

    Absence SDL

One of my favorite mods ever. This is how you make a TC.

    Time to Kill

    Excellent maps by Thomas.

Spear Resurrection: 10th Anniversary Edition SDL

The Michael Bay version of the original.

    Unsung SDL

A great mod that took place in WWI (yay, no WWII) and has a nice ending to it. Too bad it's difficuly level is quite hard because of the clunky shooting mechanics. A lot of saving is required! And the last boss was pretty tough as well.

    Totenkopf SDL

It's excellent, but the thing I like most are the little touches - bosses taunting you, the dialogue between soldiers when they can't find you, the music. I enjoy that the most.

    Totengraeber

    Classic, and rightfully so.

I'd also like to mention A Doll's House 4SDL. I think Poet's a genius, one of the few who dares to significantly alter the Wolf3d gameplay. The difficuly might be something that stops many from trying it though.

Did I mention I would LOVE to see Orb of Dilaaria SDL someday?

There was a five year anniversary release with Dosbox, which means you can play it on Windows 7. But yeah, SDL would be great.

Absence SDL, Time To Kill, Unsung SDL, and Totengraeber are the ones that I can remember off hand besides the awesome Spear Reloaded that I really like. As for Absence SDL, I wish that work would move forward for Absence 2! I'd love to see that get made.
