What are you guys currently using? Here is mine:

    CPU: Pentium M 750 1.86Ghz (downclocked to 800mhz because it's fast enough)
OS: MS-DOS 8.0 (no Windows!) and Slacko Puppy Linux (with DosBox portable) on dual boot
    RAM: 1GB
    Screen: 12.1" 1024x768
    Browser: Firefox 17.0.11 ESR

I think my setup should be good for another 10 years. Smile

I use a handful of assorted second-hand lap tops and my work computer. No idea of the specs... All run Win7 though... Sure miss having that old tower standing round humming...

Speaking of random laptops, I have a cruddy netbook, too. 1gb of ram, 1.6ghz single core, HT enabled Atom processor, but its IPC is very, very low. It's about 35 times slower than my desktop in brute CPU power. So it's kind of a joke and getting work done in that is painful.

Before I upgraded my monitor, I used a TV with that exact resolution. Is your monitor a TV too?

    Ahh I see.
You should get a summer job and upgrade those specs.  Cool My monitor is only $300 when I got it, maybe $350 now. For that price, what you're getting is pretty insane. Not only is the screen much larger (I think anything past 27 is a bit too large), the resolution is bumped but most importantly, the glossy IPS panel makes the color much better. You know how like phone screens are much better looking than an average monitor?

Gud d34l man. Talk about savings.

I'm not even familiar with the Pentium/Celeron/Atom lineup. I think for a performance orientated value buy, you have to go straight to $220 and get the i5 part for that price point, and stay there. The atom chip in my netbook is one of the first gen Atom parts as single core HT, and it is so freakin' slow. Clock per clock it's about half as fast as a typical Celeron (from what I've read). And clock per clock the Atom is about 3-4 times slower than my 4670k (after you divide the performance marks of the 4670k because it has four cores). It's better now but dear god, they are so slow I'd hardly call it an upgrade at all.

But then also mobile parts are not identical performance wise to desktop parts, so that's another hit.

But if you only play Wolf3d then you obviously don't need that much... Me, I do a whole lot apart from Wolf3d gaming. I use my CPU much more than the average gamer, actually. I actually degraded my chip for a good 100-200mhz from the overclock and the heavy workload.

I think I can hang on with this setup for a while - a graphics card upgrade would be required but my priority right now is to max the RAM on the board (8 GB). I think a 750Ti can deliver playable framerates (25 FPS) on my resolution on Low settings on the most graphically intensive games - that's just what I need for the time being (integrated GPU sucks @$$)
