Where have the awards gone? Empty Where have the awards gone?

Post by WolfForever Thu May 10, 2012 11:10 pm

I understand January with the hand problem.

But we had the DHW SoD set plus 15 Master Levels in February. We had Time to Kill in March. We had at least a POSSIBLE candidate in April - Guns and Glory 0.5. And that's not counting Odds and Ends simply because little if any of it is new. None of them got awards.

Is the Dome Award discontinued? I'm starting to wonder that myself. Or are all these sets I mentioned just shy of being award-worthy? I wouldn't think so, especially a Thomas set and a DHW community set, but I haven't actually played them so I can't say my judgement is perfect. Either way though, I'd appreciate if someone could explain this and let me know of this feature is still going to be done. I always liked it (even if it got to bit too lenient occasionally, but that's just IMO).

    Thanks.

Possible?... I worked really hard on that. Crying or Very sad

But yes, I do agree. There are certainly other mods that have been released recently that deserve at least a little recognition in that way.

Plus, I always liked to look forward to the award of the month.

Very true guys. But other than those mods that have Dome Award potentials, there hasn't been a whole lot of activity going on.

I wonder what WSJ is up to these days? I miss these kinds of mods he makes along with others (especially Metalor). Maybe new ideas are just about used up. Maybe the time for some very epic Wolf3d mods is drawing to a close. Who knows.

NONSENSE! I am idea extrodinaire! I just don't feel like putting my mouse to work at the moment. I always lose my modding buzz around summer and have it going ape-sh*t crazy in spring. Maybe that's just what's happening now.

I for one have always been working on projects since I joined the community. It's come to my attention that the overall effort from the community consistently has gone down a downward slope. If you look at the Dome archives (as well as the DHW forum archives) you'll see that the years 1999-2004 were Wolf modding's glory years. I think it all culminated in End of Destiny... Somehow (it seems) that was the pinnacle, both a beginning and an end, with most people tending to interpret it as the latter. And we all joined around that time. Jumped on the gravy train just as it reached its terminus... Or something.

But I don't care. I'll keep modding, simply because I can't stop doing it. I have no idea why. Honestly.

Truthfully, it does take some parts of at least a few of those, but all great art pieces are essentially 10% original and 90% stolen.

I'd say the place where Guns and Glory really shines is in the secret levels. Too bad most folks probably won't seem them any time soon... (if at all)

Downgrade and downgrade... Trust me, if I'd had the guts and real will, I would've released Overkill as intended; 100 levels, textured floors/ceilings, HQ sound and MIDI, heaps of new enemies, animated objects, switch-operated lab coils, artifacts by the pound, shading, fog, rain, outside atmosphere, the whole bit... Again, overblown, nothing can really take people aback anymore; not since EoD, at least, in my opinion. There's just nothing to it. T2K had little to do with Overkill other than it used some of its better maps in its latter part.

Chokster37 wrote:So who should get the award? NO ONE Very Happy
Have to admit I've never understood anything regarding "awards". People know what they want, awards make no difference at all. Neither in 'real life' or in the Wolf community. It doesn't do any good, at least from my point of view, I couldn't care less about getting an 'award' (which is basically just a JPG of a medal with some text on it describing the mod title and author). I know it's meant with good intentions, but I personally never understood the whole prospect of it.

I suppose I'd agree with this if it ended up as a secret level in Chokage SDL. cyclops pig

Brrr.. EOD, it's been eight years, and still ppl cannot think of anything better than copying Areyep and using his ideas, walls and sprites over and over again..

We need something that's a bit original (Lair of the Mantis, anyone?)

"Lair of the Mantis" was the greatest Wolf3D abandonware, in my eyes.
I found no way yet to contact TheJosh.

I myself have tons of original ideas, plots...Some mods I scrapped for reasons unrelated to "originality".

Anyway, what to you exactly mean by "originality"?. Theme (non-nazi), gameplay ("Stealth?, G&G?), plot?
(Not that I think that there is no place for new innovative ideas in all those areas)
I have great original (well, inspired, but still) plots/mod ideas which I can share with any modder of serious intentions.

using his ideas, walls and sprites over and over again..
You can use "Trench Warfare" ones too Smile

Although it's not necessarily original, I'll get to work on the Spongebobstein SDL remake when the inspiration strikes me. So that'd be something to look forward to.

I don't like that we're talking "non-original" and all that now. The Wolf modding community has always been a bit too conformist to my taste, immediately being critical or comparing to works by the same handful of artists: AReyeP, ack, Ariel, Adam Biser (guess that's why they call it 'A' stuff... lol) maybe Josh (I don't hear much talk about Trench Warfare compared to EoD), MCS, WSJ (though WSJ is pretty humble about the whole thing) and probably also BJ Rowan if he hasn't been forgotten (he's probably being re-inserted into peoples' minds after the release of his second Desperate Measures episode). It's a very small pedestal, so to speak, which is kind of sad, 'cause there've been a lot of great put-out from people of all shapes and sizes the last fifteen ought years.

IMO you have to make your vision, your passion, and not to copy someone.
With Sonder I tried to make something new and unique.

All those listed were makers of great mods indeed.
IMO they did that by trying to make/invent their own style. Richter Belmond has his own style.... those are interesting modders. Metalor is one of those too.

That may very well be true, but in his first two-three modding years when he was known as Kyo Kusanagi (which I still call him by mistake) he used mainly MajikMonkee's Image World sprites (not that I found anything wrong with that - what did they expect?! It's a source for graphics, dammit), made haphazard, buggy, insufficient maps and nothing within the game had been tested. Pooped one mod out every three weeks... It seemed. And that image got planted in all the established Wolfers' heads, and alienated him further. The fact that his spelling (which to me could seem like dyslexia or something of the like) wasn't proper either only gave him further bad reputation. Seems to me he's had a hard time coming out of that, even though he knows uses heavy coding for the most part, and upped himself in both the mapping and GFX department. It's all about first impressions - or so it seems. We are still 'ruled' (to some degree) by those who've always been here. Our Martin Luther hasn't showed up yet. Looking the Other Wa

I still have the hand problem somewhat. It takes me a lot longer to get things done. The Dome Award is discontinued until the hand and other problems due to chronic fatigue go down a lot more. As I've had to cut back I thought concentrating on getting new mods posted was the most important thing. The Metalor mod and some of those by Thomas, plus a few others would have got awarded.

Yes, it's not a Demo, as it's a full mod.
Sequels will use mostly different art, themes, enemies, Bosses, items etc.......won't be connected to Bane and are not just extended mappack of a "demo". Every trilogy part is developed by hard and extended efforts, that equals to work on a full mod.
