An old question revisited Empty An old question revisited

Post by Asa Wed Sep 29, 2010 11:52 pm

I am trying to find out if anyone remembers the Wolf3D 1.3 hack that caused Id to skip that revision number. Information on that is just as scarce now as it was back when the hack first came to public knowledge.

I looked for it back then and couldn't find it anywhere, and looking now is yielding the same result. I am trying to get the "official" story of how it came to the attention of Id, and if they ever looked at it to see what had been done to the game. I am also trying to locate a copy of it to add to my collection (I have 2 copies of the Alpha, 1 from 1992 and 1 from 2003, and more than 1 copy of each of the shareware versions (different releases and such).

I also own a copy of Wolf3D (6-episode 1.4) and SoD (1.4 with FormGen's 2 extra episodes and the front end that allows you to select which episode you want to play). It also includes FormGen's level generator.

I hope to be able to add vs. 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2 of Wolf3D (3 and 6 episode versions) and 1.0 and 1.1 SoD versions, if I can find them.

I don't know. I don't remember version 1.3. Maybe you could post asking on Diehard Wolfers forums at http://diehardwolfers.areyep.com/ or 3drealms.com forums. If Diehard Wolfers won't accept your yahoo, netscape, gmail, or other email address, then tell me and I'll post. That's because Diehard Wolfers is a board very particular about spam.

V1.3 was a supposed hack of Wolfenstein 3-D that was rumored to have included X-rated images for wall textures. I already found (again), and have in my collection, the Wolf3D 1.0 VSWAP.WL1 file that put those kinds of images in the game as wall textures (WLFNEWGR.ZIP), but that is just a VSWAP file for V1.0. The 1.3 hack was supposed to be the whole game, with a revision number of 1.3.

I have never been able to register for the Diehard Wolfers site. I have yahoo and gmail (won't have hotmail), so it doesn't accept my email address. If you could post there for me, I would appreciate it.

Links to shareware versions are ok, but please do not post any links to full versions of Wolfenstein 3D on here or the DHW forums. We could get into trouble for it.

I was not planning to post any links. I am just trying to find out more about the Wolf3D 1.3 hack, and if anyone knows where I can find a copy of it, they can PM me.

I am aware of the rules regarding links to registered or commercial software, and I do not violate those rules, anywhere. I do not know what version of Wolf3D the 1.3 hack was derived from. It may have been the shareware version, or it may have been the 3 or 6 episode registered versions. I just don't know.

Thank you for the help, stathmk. I'm thinking, it is possible to allow exceptions in logins. Would you be willing to ask Diehard Wolfers if they would be willing to allow an exception so that I can have access? I don't know what kind of "proof" I can offer that I am not a spammer, other than my behavior and performance in other forums. I am a member of 3DRealms forum, VOGONS forum, this forum, and read everything I can find on Wolfenstein 3-D. I have not collected every mod that's ever been made, but I'm working on it.

My site is The Wolfenstein 3-D Mall. Do not let the word Mall throw you. In this context it is not about "shopping", but rather about creative "shops". Each shop will showcase a different version/port of the Wolfenstein 3-D game. I'm starting with the ones I'm most familiar with, PC W3D, PC SoD, Mac W3D. I will add other shops as I get to them. For the ports I cannot document (no Linux, MacOSX or game platform for those versions, my Mac System 7 environment is emulated, and I run W3D and SoD in DOSBox), I am making it possible for someone else to help with the creation of those shops. It isn't ready yet, I hardly have anything on the site so far, and am still developing the look and feel of the site.

If you would just ask one of the mods to come read this post, and check me out on the forums I've listed. Look at my site (what little there is there), and judge for themselves whether or not I should be allowed access, I would appreciate it.

At the moment the DHW forum has a fault in the registration process which is preventing new members from joining. Once this has been fixed then we can sort out the valid email address hurdle. I see no reason why you shouldn't be allowed access.

Meanwhile, I can put a link to The Wolfenstein 3-D Mall for you on the Dome if you want.

I noticed the proposed Acorn/Archimedes shop on your site so you may be interested in the front and back cover pics of that version in the Gallery section on here.

An old question revisited Empty Diehard Wolfers Moderators

Schabbs, it sounds like you know more about The Diehard Wolfers moderators and their technical issues than I do. So could you please talk to the moderators for Asa?

I understand the issue. I can wait. I've been waiting this long.

I would appreciate the link. I hope people will become interested in what I am doing, and perhaps participate in some way.

Those covers will be a nice addition. If there are any players of that version that want to tackle documenting it, when I have the site ready, I can make it possible for them to submit content to be added. Each shop will have a "Manager". That is the person primarily responsible for the content of that shop.

Thank you for your assistance, Schabbs. Smile

An old question revisited Empty Some of the story is uncovered

Post by Asa Fri Oct 01, 2010 9:48 pm

It was in a self-interview Joe Siegler wrote, that is posted here. I have read that document at least 5 times, and only now do I see the whole paragraph.

Joe first saw the 1.3 hack and reported it to Apogee. Apogee in turn notified Id. Id then decided to skip the 1.3 revision number because of it. That part of the story is nailed down.

Now that I know that, I have asked Joe some questions, hoping to spur his memory a little, and hopefully shed a little more light on the subject. According to Joe, when Id made the announcement concerning the 1.3 hack, every place that had it suddenly lost it. That does reduce the likely hood of finding a copy easily, but it does not rule it out.

However long it took from the release of the hack to the announcement by Id is how long it had to be downloaded. How many Wolfers would not have downloaded it? The only ones who wouldn't would be the ones that heard about it after it was gone (like me).

The ones who downloaded it would basically fall into 2 catagories, those who kept it once they knew what it was, and those who deleted it when they knew what it was. I'm convinced that there are more of the former than there are of the latter. And I believe that this increases my chances of finding a copy somewhere.

I don't know what Joe is going to say, if he responds at all, to my questions. If you want to follow it, the thread is here.

    Thanks for the link! Smile

I have been to MrLowe's site before, but didn't know he played the Archimedes version. That page will be useful for gleaning much content.

I have gotten closer to the look I'm looking for on my site. The ALPHA File has been the test bed of ideas for making the divs work the way I want them to. As much as I like the JS drop menus, I am thinking I want to use them in a different way, and I have to figure out how to make it work that way. I will be uploading a new version of the main page. In it, all of the shops will be "active", but will contain no content because I am still working on the Original PC version. I will try to add some content to the others, but I'm not promising anything. I spend all day every day working on this, and because I'm doing it all myself, progress comes at a snail's pace. Please bear with me.
