I thought that we should have a thread in the off-topic section to subscribe to for interesting Science discoveries.

The Thread For Posting Interesting Science Discoveries Empty The 7th Row of The Periodic Table is Completed!

Post by stathmk Mon Jan 04, 2016 7:45 am

The 7th Row of The Periodic Table is Completed!:

The elements 113, 115, 117, and 118 were discovered by scientists in Japan, Russia and America, and are the first to be added to the table since 2011. They were verified on Dec. 30:
    - http://www.theverge.com/2016/1/4/10707100/elements-added-to-periodic-table-discovery-confirmed
    - http://www.theguardian.com/science/2016/jan/04/periodic-tables-seventh-row-finally-filled-as-four-new-elements-are-added?CMP=fb_us
    - Scroll down to the bottom of this article and there’s a decay diagram:
    http://www.riken.jp/en/pr/press/2015/20151231_1/

My response commentary related to elements or subatomic particles:

-If you have a scale model of an atom, the nucleus would be about the size of a decimal point.  The electrons would be a mile or 2 away.  I think that the scientist saying this is named Michio Kaku.  99.999% of an atom is empty unless it’s in a neutron star, quark star, or black hole.
-The Higgs Boson (The God Particle) was originally called The Goddamn particle.  CERN is now looking for a more elusive particle.
-Anti-matter is made of protons that are negatively charged & electrons that are positively charged.  I saw an article about a year ago that that there have been 100, 200, or 300 atoms of anti-hydrogen & anti-helium observed.  When matter & anti-matter collide, they obliterate each other.  There could be an entire theoretical periodic table of anti-matter.
-More than 90% of the universe is dark matter & dark energy.  There may be an entire periodic table of dark matter that we haven’t discovered!?
-We are not Muslims.  In about the year 700 or 800 in Arabia, it was believed that were 14 or 16 elements.  Arabs sometimes were blacksmiths or swordsmiths.  But they called it alchemy instead of chemistry.
-Aluminum is an element taking up about 10% of the Earth’s crust, but “Ripley’s Believe It Or Not” said that it wasn’t discovered until the 1800s.
-In The English translation of Genesis, Lott’s wife turns into a pillar of salt.  Salt is sodium chloride.  A woman is 98.9% carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, & phosphorus.  Sodium & chloride are part of the 1.1%.  She couldn’t have had a chemical reaction turning into salt.
-Uranium eventually decays into lead.  It has a half-life of 4.5 or 4.6 billion years.  I saw an article than a particular chemist uses a uranium ore rock as a door stop.  Inhaling or eating uranium would cause effects about the same as inhaling or eating lead.
-The Big Bang created radiation, hydrogen, & helium.  The first supernovas created elements up to lead.  The second generation of supernovas created elements from lead up to uranium, or to neptunium, or to plutonium.  Any elements heavier than plutonium have a shorter half-life.
-This is weird.  On the topic of 4 elements, here’s “Prank caller or Mr $H!T for brains:” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_Mq6z6sOX4 I was looking for a shorter, briefer, funnier, Atheist Experience video of a different caller saying to Matt Dillahunty that The Bible proves that there are 4 elements.  The caller said that The Bible proves that there are 4 elements of time, space, matter, & energy because of Genesis 1:1.  He said, “In The Beginning (time), God (energy) created The Heavens (space) & Earth (matter).”  Then one of the hosts said that there are over 100 elements.  Then the caller said, “What?”  Then the hosts smiled saying, “Nobody is this stupid or this douchy.  You’re a troll.”  They hung up.

For a split second there, I though that you'd mention The Sega Saturn or the canceled Sega Jupiter.  You can see the canceled Sega Neptune & canceled Sega Pluto on Youtube.

The Thread For Posting Interesting Science Discoveries Empty New Mersenne Prime & New Planet

Post by stathmk Fri Jan 29, 2016 11:12 am

In Computer Science or Mathematics news On January 18 or 19, a new Mersenne prime had been made public!  It’s over 22 million digits: http://primes.utm.edu/top20/page.php?id=3  I think it would be over 7,000 pages in Microsoft Word!

In the news for January 20, a brown dwarf star or ninth planet may be found with 5,000 times the mass of Pluto: http://news.yahoo.com/ninth-planet-may-exist-solar-system-us-scientists-174753045.html  I read in Discover magazine about 5 years ago that scientists think that Neptune in the early solar system may have had gravity that slingshot a planet out of the visible solar system.  This may or may not be it.

Am I supposed to recognize her?  What TV show, movie, or video game is she from?

EDIT:  I had heard that there's a particular magazine issue with Taylor Swift & a watermark on the cover.  When you hold it up to a web cam she dances.  That's what this reminds me of.

The Thread For Posting Interesting Science Discoveries Empty A particular black hole weighs 40 billion suns!

Post by stathmk Mon Jul 31, 2017 6:37 pm

A particular black hole is the sixth largest quasar known and as massive as 40 billion suns!:

    https://www.forbes.com/sites/startswithabang/2017/07/31/universes-largest-black-hole-may-have-an-explanation-at-last/

That article includes an artist's simulation of what would happen if it was only 18 million times as far away from the Sun as Earth and were apparently about as bright as the Sun from Earth.  It reminds me that The Hiroshima uranium bomb was hotter than the Sun's surface.  If you had one eye open and looked at the Hiroshima explosion, the radiation would damage your eye proteins, damage your eye cell DNA, and there would be a delayed reaction where you'd go blind.

If the Sun weighs 300,000 or 333,333 Earths and it's accurate, then the black hole or quasar is 40 billion * 300,000 times the weight of the Earth!

My understanding is that a quasar is a black hole-like object that formed before the universe was 1 billion years old, and it's light took 11 or 12 billion years to reach us because it's 11 or 12 billion light years away.  It probably rotted away by radioactive fission, or had a supernova in the last 12 billion years.

The Thread For Posting Interesting Science Discoveries Empty Technology Marches On

Post by stathmk Mon Jul 30, 2018 12:49 pm

I originally thought that I'd start a "Technology Marches On" thread.  Then I thought that this is more appropriate.

I loaded up Steam on my Windows Vista computer.  It had a message that, “Steam will stop running on Windows Vista in 157 days.”  I was looking at Fallout 3: Game of The Year Edition on Steam and it included, “Notice: Fallout 3 is not optimized for Windows 7 and later.”  I can’t think of any other non-DOSBox or non-SCUMMVM games with a message like that.

Best Buy will stop stocking music CDs on December 31, 2020.  They aren’t selling as well because more people would rather watch Youtube music videos, listen to card chips like at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbGDPFVjvVU , music on thumb drives, iPods, listen to cell phone music, and etc.  Automobile manufacturers are taking notice and including less built-in CD players.  Also on December 31, 2020, there will be a Windows Update to deactivate Adobe Flash for security loophole reasons.

I suspect that camera film will stop being made and developed soon.  In the Middle East, I think that there are still some people who use film cameras for some reason.  If you find your family’s or relatives’ camera film or slides, then convert them to 400 dpi .tif files soon while services to convert to digital are still available.  I have family videos on VHS.  You might want to convert your VHS or Betamax tapes to digital while these services are still available.  It’s somewhat like how VCR repairmen are possibly going out of business.

I hear from Youtube the rumors that there will be an X-Box Two and Playstation 5.  It might have been ReviewTechUSA on Youtube who quoted a businessman that the next generation of consoles will be the last before everything is downloads only.

I am suspicious that companies want us to buy a new computer every 7 or 8 years partly because if computers didn’t innovate fast enough then it would be easier for China or Russia to hack into your computer and hold it ransom.

If you have Windows Vista, then “The Art of Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus” ebook will not open up in Windows Vista’s Chrome Kindle Cloud Reader for some reason.  My 15 other ebooks loaded up just fine in Windows Vista.  However, this Wolfenstein book loaded just fine in my Windows 10 computer.

If somebody does DNA testing for a living, then they can look into databases, figure out how people are interrelated, and find the person matching the DNA of the murder or rapist.  This happened last month with The Golden State Serial Killer and his discarded DNA.  A man in Indiana this month was arrested for murdering a girl 20 years ago because people who study DNA for a living figured out how he’s interrelated to other people in databases.  It’s almost like if you don’t object to police having your fingerprints on file, then you shouldn’t object to the police having your DNA on file if you aren’t breaking the laws.

On The July 29th episode of The American Edition of 60 Minutes, it was a rerun.  Zoo animals sometimes get genetic disorders or a lack of genetic diversity.  They can take the DNA of all of the giraffes in America.  They can arrange mating between giraffes and slaughter the one with the least genetic diversity or greatest chance of offspring with genetic disorders.  It’s somewhat like I knew that this would happen, but not this soon.

You can’t take dinosaur DNA from a mosquito in tree sap and do sensationalist Jurassic Park-style cloning partly because DNA has a half-life of 500 to 600 years and DNA samples can be prone to contamination.  I had an article about 5 years ago from WIRED magazine about how they want to bring back a dinosaur in decades or centuries.  Birds evolved from dinosaurs.  They want to take a Chinese chicken breed with teeth and change it by 1 or 2 genes every generation until it’s a dinosaur.  Humans have 23,000 to 30,000 genes and I don’t know how many genes chickens or dinosaurs have.

More than half of the foods in the supermarket are genetically modified.  I like the way that genetically modified foods require fewer pesticides, are less prone to pests, less prone to viruses, are more likely to survive a crop failure, and can feed the world.  The first one off of the top of my head is that papayas are genetically modified to resist the papaya ringspot virus.  If you don’t like GMOs or artificial selection, then you must know about teosinte and bananas.  Over the course of 10,000 years, the Native Americans used artificial selection on teosinte to create corn, and then larger corn cobs.  The original banana breed almost went extinct in a banana famine.  You must boil the original banana breed, take out the seeds, and something tells me it wasn’t selling very well.  Mushrooms or bamboo grow the fastest and there’s Science Fiction about astronauts growing genetically altered mushrooms or bamboo on the spaceships to Mars or further out.

Jupiter is radioactive enough to kill you the same day you visit.  Jupiter has an icy moon and I can’t remember if it’s Titan, Europa, or Enceladus.  Some decade or century, there will be a robotic probe sent to that moon because we obviously can’t send men there.  The robotic probe will drill 5 or 6 miles through the ice and check to see if there’s life in the water.  If the life in the water exists, then it’s protected by radiation from 5 or 6 miles of ice.  Before you say that this isn’t plausible to drill, Ripley’s has information that Russia has drilled 7 or 8 miles through Earth’s crust.

Anna K emailed me that she wanted to post this article at https://www.iqsdirectory.com/blog/can-human-hibernation-take-us-to-mars/ because I mentioned traveling to Mars and because of the cryogenic hibernation mentioned in the Walt Disney urban legend at https://wolf3d.darkbb.com/t1514-yo-dawgs-i-m-here-to-throw-it-down .  However, when she joined the forum, she seemed to forget to post.

So I’m posting the article for her, but I don’t quite agree with it.  The article sounds a little bit like an infomercial.  I saw the Penn & Teller BS episode about death and it included cryogenics.  I saw the Adam Ruins Everything episode about death and it included cryogenics.  First of all, a cryogenics company would still need to be in business for several years without running out of money or the body would thaw.
