Doom 2 update patches, backup folders, and manuals

Post by stathmk on Fri Jan 23, 2009 10:19 am

Manuals for Doom, Ultimate Doom, Doom 2, and Final Doom:

http://www.olddoom.com/home.htm

Update Patches for Doom 2:

Install Doom2 into a folder called doom2\doom2backup . You should have 10 files if it’s Doom 2 version 1.666 before patching. Copy files from http://www.olddoom.com/home.htm into the folder for the update patches. Once it’s patched, it will load fast if you’re not using DOSBox. Download the latest version of DOSBox at dosbox.com . Create a shortcut for DOSBox. Go to the view menu of your folder containing the DOSBox shortcut, and select “Tiles.” Drag and drop Doom2.exe over top of the DOSBox shortcut. Doom 2 will now load slow enough that you can read the text. It should have “Doom 2: Hell On Earth v1.9” in red at the top of the window. That’s just to check that it worked and the next times you can run source ports instead of DOSBox.

Backups of Doom 2:

Take your doom2\doom2backup folder and change the name to doom2\doom2v1.9backup . Erase the .zip and patching readme files in the folder because you don’t need them anymore. Copy it and change the name to doom2\rojas\oawse\ for Operation Artic Wolf Special Edition (http://wolf3d.darkbb.com/wolf3d-haven-chat-f12/load-laz-rojas-operation-arctic-wolf-special-edition-in-doom-2-t858.htm ), or doom2\rojas\treasurehunt\ for Treasure Hunt, or doom2\ZDoom\ for ZDoom, or doom2\such-and-such . The point is that you’ll want backup files of your updated copy of Doom 2.

Doom Shareware, 3 Episodes of Doom, 4 Episodes of Ultimate Doom, or Final Doom:

Create a folder called doomsw\doombackup , ultimatedoom\doombackup , doom\doombackup , or etc and do pretty much the same thing to update it. You’ll want backup files of that too.

Backups of Wolf3D and Spear Episodes:

While you’re at, also install backup folders of Wolf 3D Shareware, Wolf 3D Registered Version, Spear of Destiny Shareware, and any of your Spear of Destiny episodes because you’ll want to copy them for add-ons.

Other Backups:

Create backup folders to copy of ROTT, Blake Stone, Quake, Heretic, Hexen, and Strife games because there are add-ons for them too. Also update Doom 3, Return to Castle Wolfenstein games, or any other game with its own “Planet” web site such as http://www.planetdoom.com , or http://www.planetwolfenstein.com because you’ll want backups of those games to copy into other folders too.
